Sandwich Bar St Helena Sushi
The Sandwich Bar started with Sushi on the menu during the latter part of last year and six months on it is still a popular menu choice.
Sushi for us, is really a unique eating experience and our love for this culinary delight started several years ago. We have never visited the origins of this fabulous food, but we have experienced these healthy bite sized bursts of flavour in numerous cities around the world.
Once we had the initial experience, ideas started pinging around on how we could enjoy the same textures and flavours back on St. Helena, knowing full well that there was no outlet for Sushi despite having a proclaimed oriental restaurant.
That started a search for DVDs and tutorials and armed with a supply seaweed sheets, sushi rice, vinegars, pickled ginger and other treats, we arrived back in St Helena experimenting with sushi for personal consumption.
We did this for several years, even after starting our own hospitality business, often having friends around and having our own sushi making sessions, but deep down and on the back of requests from clients, there was always the urge to satisfy our customers and ourselves and produce Sushi for sale through the Sandwich Bar.
Last year, Linda and I decided to trial sushi for a month and gauge the interest. Such was its success that we have continued and are still adding varieties to our packs. We are blessed with the freshest tuna, we import from one of the best supplies of Asian Foods in South Africa and that’s why we are able to offer you fresh Sushi every Tuesday from the Sandwich Bar.
We have regulars, but we are sure that there are some of you out there, who have never tried it, or maybe tried and didn’t like the taste or the texture, or maybe just the thought of raw fish does not appeal to you? – That I’m afraid is not a good enough excuse – I remember mates cringing when I cut of a sliver of fresh red tuna and ate it… now they too reserve their portion of Sushi “because its great”.
Try our Maki Sushi – think about the freshness of the Tuna, the taste of the vinegar, the flavours and crunchiness of the pickled ginger or the wasabi burn in your sinuses, in all a foodie adventure.
At The Sandwich Bar we offer you variety, if you don’t like the fish (a sin), we can do vegetarian, we provide platters for special functions and if you prefer something different, please let us know!
